چکیده

The growth of five cumulus congestus clouds over the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, Arizona was subjected to detailed examination by means of photogranmetric and statistical analysis. It was found that these clouds exhibited a pulsating form of cellular convection as they grew upward. Once maximum height was achieved, the circulation became a linearly increasing function of time. The pulsations were found to be related to the buoyancy restoring force of the statically stable air with frequencies near ten minutes. Higher frequencies were found near one to two minutes which could not be definitely accounted for by conventional turbulence theory. An over-all acceleration of the motion was shown to be caused by an underlying flow which responded to the mean state of the cloud column. A physical model is proposed for the circulation of a growing cumulus in which two cells are acting concurrently, yet independently, along the same vertical axis. The correct time behavior is shown to result from applying Bjerknes' circulation theorem, modified to include entrainment and mixing. Thesis Supervisor: Henry G. Marine Boundary Layer Cloud Observations in the Azores

The recent deployment of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) Mobile Facility at Graciosa Island, Azores, in the context of the Clouds, Aerosol and Precipitation in theMarine Boundary Layer (CAP-MBL) field campaign added the most extensive (19 months) and comprehensive dataset of marine boundary layer (MBL) clouds to date. Cloud occurrence is high (60%–80%), with a summertime min...

Marine Boundary Layer Cloud Observations at the Azores

The recent deployment of the ARM Mobile Facility at the Graciosa Island, Azores in the context of the Clouds, Aerosol and Precipitation in the Marine Boundary Layer (CAPMBL) field campaign added the most extensive and comprehensive dataset of MBL clouds to date (April 2009–December 2010). Cloud occurrence is high (60–80%) with a summertime minimum. Liquid precipitation, diagnosed as the detecti...

Forecasting Convective Initiation by Monitoring the Evolution of Moving Cumulus in Daytime GOES Imagery

This study identifies the precursor signals of convective initiation within sequences of 1-km-resolution visible (VIS) and 4–8-km infrared (IR) imagery from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) instrument. Convective initiation (CI) is defined for this study as the first detection of Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) reflectivities 35 dBZ produced by conv...

Evolution of small cumulus clouds in Florida: observations of pulsating growth

Observations have been made in six small cumulus clouds using instrumented aircraft, a ground-based radar, and a 95 GHz airborne Doppler radar. The clouds occurred on two days during the Small Cumulus Microphysics Study in east-central Florida, summer 1995. Cloud tops were below 3 km and in-cloud temperatures were warmer than 108C. Maximum observed reflectivity factors were less than 0 dBZ. The...

تاثیر نوع ابرهای پایین جو بر میزان دقت شبیه سازی رواناب در مدل SWAT

Introduction: Patterns of spatial and temporal rainfall impact on runoff and outlet hydrograph (Cordery, 1993; James, 1994). Results of different studies have clarified that simulation by using diverse rainfall data could increase the reliance of results. These were much more sensible in which areas encounter with data scarcity (Mello et al., 2008; Bekiaris et al., 2008). Rainfall properties in...
